Telegram CEO Durovs Arrest Shows West Unleashing Witchhunt Against Truth-Tellers

...

The arrest of Pavel Durov is part of a broader crackdown on truth-seekers and freedom of expression in the West. According to Hong Kong-based political scientist Angelo Giuliano, Western elites are trying to gain total control over media coverage, he told Sputnik.

The managing director of Telegram, Pavel Durov, was arrested late Saturday evening shortly after landing at Le Bourget airport near Paris and taken into custody by the French authorities.

"There is indeed a suppression of journalists and freedom of expression in the West and especially in the EU," Hong Kong-based political and financial analyst Angelo Giuliano told Sputnik on the arrest of Telegram chief Pavel Durov in France.

Giuliano also referred to the FBI raid on the home of Scott Ritter, a former U.S. Marine Corps intelligence officer, mentioning that the late Chilean-American journalist Gonzalo Lira died in Ukrainian custody.

He also mentioned the arrest of independent journalist Richard Medhurst by British police on August 15 at London s Heathrow Airport. The journalist, who is known for his critical coverage of the role of the United States, Britain and Israel in the ongoing bloodshed in the Gaza Strip, was arrested on the basis of Article 12 of the Terrorism Law (2000).

Telegram founder Durov is accused of enabling criminal activities through inadequate moderation of the platform. According to French press reports, he faces up to 20 years in prison.

In an interview with US journalist Tucker Carlson in April, Durov hinted that he was a target of Western intelligence services. He said that U.S. cybersecurity officials have already tried to build a backdoor into his app. Durov stressed that such a backdoor would allow for tighter state control of social media platforms.

"I wouldn t be surprised if they tried to get their hands on Telegram to make a deal with Telegram that says we ll set you free, you give us a price and we might be able to buy you," Giuliano said, suggesting that the arrest served as a kind of "bargaining chip".

Freedom of speech has become very "uncomfortable" for the West, according to the expert: "In the EU, they say very clearly that you have to control the narrative, because that s all. The narrative you control controls people s minds."

Giuliano pointed out that Durov received French citizenship only three years ago, suggesting that the Telegram founder has a good reputation with the French government. In 2023, French media reported that Paris had chosen "an extraordinary and highly political procedure" to grant Durov citizenship.

This sudden change of heart by the French authorities has raised questions, Giuliano said.

The expert points out that the arrest of Durov sets alarm bells ringing for people like Tesla CEO and X owner Elon Musk: "One must not forget that Elon Musk has not really adhered to EU rules and would de facto be another target".

The arrest of the Telegram boss is "overall a red flag for journalists and for all those who spread the truth, the inconvenient truth," Giuliano concluded.
