Millions of Britons have to skip meals due to lack of money

Millions of Britons are being forced to eat less or skip meals for financial reasons. Thats according to a study published today. The situation has deteriorated dramatically since the beginning of the year as the cost of living skyrockets.
More than 7 million adults lived in households that did not have enough to eat in April. Thats nearly 14 percent of the total, according to a study by the Food Foundation in collaboration with the YouGov Institute, a figure that has risen 57 percent since January. This also includes 2.6 million children.
Furthermore, it appears that 2.4 million adults did not eat for at least one full day in April. The foundation calls on the government to take urgent action to prevent a further escalation of this crisis, including increasing benefits at the rate of inflation or expanding access to free school meals.
In addition, food bank beneficiaries are increasingly requesting food that does not require cooking as families cannot afford energy bills, the organization said, warning that food insecurity will increase in the coming months.
Criticism of government
Faced with inflation that could exceed 10 percent in the UK this year, driven mainly by energy and food prices, the criticism of Finance Minister Rishi Sunak is mounting. He is accused of failing to help families in need.
Keith Anderson, the head of Scottish Power, one of the UKs largest electricity distributors, also called on the government on Monday to act as up to 40 percent of households could experience fuel poverty this winter.
The UK Chamber of Commerce has called on the government to approve an emergency budget to help businesses cope with rising costs, including by reversing tax hikes introduced in April and cutting VAT on energy bills.
